Course Information
Description A work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized theory, skills and concepts. A learning plan is developed by the college and the employer.
Required Textbooks Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

Learning Outcomes As outlined in the learning plan, apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry; and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry.
Program Student Learning Outcomes •Utilize computer software for basic office functions. •Uses medical terminology, jargon, and abbreviations correctly. •Define general legal terms as they apply to the practice of medicine in ambulatory care settings. •Understand and apply ethics relevant to medical coding and medical office practice. •Apply ICD and CPT rules and guidelines to complete claims forms for submission.

Students should keep a record of their grades. Instructor will not average grades for students. 
Instructor will not drop grades.
Due dates are posted each week.
Course Policies
Instructor Policies Students must work a MINIMUM of 10-15 hours per week for a period of 15 weeks (or the length of the semester). The students must have completed 160 hours by the last day classes of the semester (December 6).

Students may not work more than 20 hours per week nor end the semester early. Students must work all semester in order to receive a more beneficial learning experience - even if hours have been met.


Students must adhere to the dress code and other policies of their internship location (i.e., scrubs, no denim, piercings, cover tattoos, etc.).

* REMEMBER: Your internship employer has graciously given us the opportunity to work with them to provide our students with a hands-on, practical learning experience. We work with the employer to schedule working hours, meetings, etc. at their convenience.

* Assignments and due dates are posted weekly ion blackboard. Several times a week, check your calendar, the announcements, your email, and the To-Do List.

* Students are responsible for being prepared for internship.

* The student is responsible for completing all assigned work, including reading assignments, and doing so by required dates.

* STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO FOLLOW WRITTEN and/or ORAL INSTRUCTIONS. It is important to follow all directions. A failure to follow written and/or oral instructions will result in penalties.

*** DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO COMPLETE WORK AND TURN IN FORMS. ***

* COMPUTER FAILURE AND LACK OF INTERNET ACCESS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE EXCUSES FOR NOT TURNING IN REQUIRED WORK OR MEETING WEEKLY REQUIREMENTS.

* PLEASE.... Do NOT wait until the last weeks of class to discuss your grades with your instructor.

* If you are having issues with the internship site, material covered, or have any other issues, please contact the instructor as soon as possible.

* If you would like to discuss your grades, contact the instructor to meet in person or through virtual meeting. (Instructor will speak to the student only.)
Attendance Policy Students must notify internship supervisor and instructor regarding absences.

It is the responsibility of the student to make up any missing hours at the convenience of the employer.
All internship hours must be completed by noon on December 6th.

* Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students with more than three absences from the course will receive an academic penalty.

* Poor attendance is a leading reason for termination from a job in all areas of employment. With this factor in mind, the instructor monitors student course activity weekly.

* Class participation is required. It is important to be active within the course.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been exposed to COVID 19 or diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition on the COVID 19 Notification Form (available via a link on the Student Code of Conduct COVID19 webpage). This information will be provided to the Dean of Student Services. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.

Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect As per Texas law and LSCPA policy, all LSCPA employees, including faculty, are required to report allegations or disclosures of child abuse or neglect to the designated authorities, which may include a local or state law enforcement agency or the Texas Department of Family Protective Services.
